“Individual interest serves the common good.”
This fundamental quote seems to have been misinterpreted to mean, “Every man for himself~!” It appears to have become a reason for a self-centered cash-grab that
totally disregards public health.
What we seem to have missed is the “common” part........
" Instead of answering a question or request, others would
question the question, making things only more difficult
and slowing down business, frustrating both me and
themselves. I began to see this meaningless and superior
behavior as a conditioned, defensive stance to bullying
in their own lives. We are often feeling bullied at work,
feeling used in our service to others, and not valued and
treated equally. I thought to myself, “Who wouldn’t be
aloof, moody, and antagonistic?” "
The truth is that drugs and addictions are everywhere.
They are in our food, they are in our entertainment.
They are in our phones, and even the cars that we drive compulsively to get anywhere lest we soon get cabin fever;
finding it difficult to walk anywhere to save our lives. The
fact of the matter is that most of us are using drugs, have
an addiction, or are dependent on something of some
kind.
For almost 175 years since the advent of modern
psychiatry in the 1850s, we have been practicing a
pathologizing model of mental health. Since the dawn
of wide-spread chemical, pharmaceutical treatments in
the 1950s, and up to the present day, we have increasingly
become dependent on medication alone to treat our mental
health conditions. Mental Healthcare has become anything but mentally healthy.
“Why does homelessness need to be a bad thing?”
Problems are only problems if they are seen as problems, and not opportunities.

Mental Diversity
This is a short version of what originally was 287 pages that became my debut book, The Power of Us. It is about ending stigma in mental health, advancing our understanding of mental illness and mental health care, and taping into the brain power necessary for propelling our species into a new millennium.
How thinking in terms of "us" renders the solutions that we need.
